Barry University celebrated an exciting milestone on May 16, 2026, as the inaugural canine-handler teams completed the 12-week Canine Assisted Trauma-Informed Services Specialist (CATISS) certificate program sponsored by the School of Mental Health and Social Work. CATISS is an innovative, expert-led training designed to prepare professionals and their canine partners to support trauma-informed practice with compassion, skill, and cultural humility.

Throughout the program, participants developed strong handler-canine partnerships while gaining expertise in trauma-informed principles, canine health and well-being, and culturally responsive care. The program culminated in the development of practical canine-assisted intervention proposals tailored to participants’ professional settings and communities.

Participants consistently shared how meaningful and transformative the experience was, expressing deep appreciation for the supportive learning environment, expert faculty, and unique bond formed throughout the program.

Graduates of the CATISS program earned a certificate aligned with the standards of the Animal-Assisted Intervention Services International and the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations which further enhances their professional preparation and credibility in the growing field of canine-assisted services.

Barry proudly celebrates Ms. Julie Dudley and Kilo, and Ms. Janet Morgan and Apollo, as the first graduating cohort and looks forward to the meaningful impact these handler-canine teams will bring to the individuals, organizations, and communities they serve.

Special acknowledgement was extended to Dr. Janus Moncur, author and professor of the program, a two-time graduate of Barry University’s MSW and PhD in Social Work programs, and her canine partner, Bear; Canine Behaviorist Ms. Cindy Stone and her canine partner, Nola; and the distinguished national experts who facilitated trainings throughout the semester, including Dr. Hoy-Gerlach, Dr. Ellen Furlong, Mr. Jack Furlong, Ms. Connie Jantzen, Dr. Zenithson Ng, and Ms. Jess Feliciano.

As Barry University celebrates this inaugural class, the program marks the beginning of what will continue to be an impactful initiative dedicated to advancing compassionate care and expanding the possibilities of trauma-informed support.
