Will I make friends? Will my classes be harder than I expect? Did I choose the right major? What if I don’t know exactly what I want to do?

If you’re asking yourself those questions, you’re not alone. Nearly every college student has wondered the same thing before walking onto campus for the first time.

Here are a few things many students say they wish they had known sooner.

1. You don’t have to have everything figured out.

College isn’t a test of how much you already know. It’s an opportunity to discover what interests you, challenge yourself, and grow. Your path may change along the way—and that’s often where the best opportunities begin.

2. Everyone is looking for connection.

It may seem like everyone else already knows someone. They don’t. The conversations you start during Orientation, in class, or while grabbing lunch can become friendships that last well beyond graduation.

3. Ask for help early.

The most successful students aren’t the ones who never need help. They’re the ones who know when to ask. Faculty, advisors, tutors, librarians, coaches, and staff are all invested in your success.

4. Say yes to new experiences.

Join a student organization. Attend a campus event. Volunteer. Take on a leadership opportunity. The experiences outside the classroom often shape you just as much as the ones inside it.

5. Orientation is more important than it looks.

It isn’t just about schedules or campus tours. It’s where you begin to understand the community you’re joining. You’ll meet people, learn about resources, build confidence, and arrive on your first day feeling like you belong instead of feeling like a visitor.

6. Growth happens one step at a time.

Confidence isn’t something you arrive with. It’s something you build—through your first presentation, your first exam, your first clinical, internship, research project, performance, or leadership role.
