In “Political Ideology and Social Work” by Mitchell Rosenwald, published by Columbia University Press in August 2023, the author delves into the intricate relationship between political beliefs and the field of social work. With a focus on contentious issues like abortion, immigration, and racial inequality, Rosenwald explores how personal political ideologies impact social workers’ education, practice, and efforts towards societal change. By tracing the historical evolution of political thought within the profession, the book addresses the challenges social workers face in maintaining a balance between personal views and professional responsibilities. Both clinical and policy aspects are considered, along with recommendations for fostering political diversity and reconciliation within the social work community, aiming to bolster the field’s effectiveness.

The book written by Dr. Rosenwald is completely relevant to the political times we live in and the way I practice social work. As an LCSW in two high schools in Palm Beach County, students are already talking about the Florida Parental Educational Rights Act, “Don’t Say Gay Bill” which severely restricts the rights and educational opportunities for LGBTQ+ students and youth of color. My goal is to have students talk about this so-called act and how it’s affecting them. I am hoping to empower high school students to get involved in the political process without violating this act. I will keep fighting the good fight.
