The fall semester is in full swing. Classes are picking up, assignments are piling up and midterms may already be on the calendar. Between studying, group projects, activities, work and making time for friends, staying productive can become a challenge of its own.

A few simple habits can help students stay organized, manage their time and avoid feeling overwhelmed as the semester gets busier.

1. Plan your week

Take a few minutes at the beginning of each week to look at upcoming assignments, exams, meetings and other commitments. Mapping out when you have time to work can help prevent last-minute stress.

2. Break big assignments into smaller tasks

A 10-page paper can feel overwhelming. Finding three sources or writing one section feels much more manageable. Breaking larger assignments into smaller steps makes it easier to get started and track your progress.

3. Focus on one thing at a time

Constantly switching between assignments, notifications and social media can make it harder to concentrate. Put your phone away, close unnecessary tabs and give one task your full attention for a set amount of time. Even 25 to 30 minutes of focused work can make a difference.

4. Put study time on your calendar

Your calendar can be useful for more than classes. Add study sessions, assignment deadlines, meetings and other commitments to see how your time is being used. Scheduling study time also makes it easier to stick to it.

5. Make time for breaks

Productivity does not mean working nonstop. Taking time to eat, get some sleep, exercise or simply step away from a screen can help you recharge and return to your work with a clearer mind.

The middle of the semester can be busy, but a little planning and a consistent routine can make those busy weeks much easier to manage.
