Barry University graduate Dr. Traci Baxendale Ball published research exploring new approaches to treating Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) earlier this year.

Her article, “New Guidelines for Social Workers Who Treat Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder,” was published in Clinical Social Work, a peer-reviewed journal, in February 2026. The article has already reached more than 10,000 views.

In her article, Dr. Baxendale Ball examines the need for clinical social workers to better recognize and understand CPTSD, a condition that differs from PTSD and can have long-term effects on individuals, families and communities. As clinical social workers make up the largest group of mental health professionals in the United States, Baxendale Ball emphasizes the importance of practitioners staying informed about emerging diagnostic trends and treatment innovations.

Her research responds to recent treatment guidelines introduced by the American Psychological Association (APA) and builds on existing research supporting phase-based approaches to CPTSD treatment. Baxendale Ball proposes a five-phase framework designed to help social workers navigate the complex and often lengthy treatment process.

The framework brings together evidence-based practices and can be used by individual practitioners or adapted for multidisciplinary teams treating patients concurrently.

Her published research adds to the growing conversation around effective approaches to treating CPTSD and supporting individuals affected by complex trauma.
