Barry University’s School of Mental Health and Social Work is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of Doctor of Social Work (DSW) alumna Dr. Kris Fulkerson, who has a newly published book, Grief in the Middle of Nowhere: Special Considerations for Rural Grieving Children.
Drawing on research, professional expertise, and compelling storytelling, Dr. Fulkerson explores the unique experiences of children navigating grief in rural communities. Her work highlights the barriers many rural families face when seeking support and goes beyond identifying the problem by offering practical solutions that can transform the lives of these bereaved youths.
As the need for trauma-informed and grief-informed care continues to grow, Dr. Fulkerson’s scholarship provides valuable insights that can help strengthen support systems for young people in underserved areas. Her work not only advances the field of social work but also amplifies the voices and experiences of children whose stories are too often unheard.
Dr. Fulkerson’s achievement reflects the mission of Barry University’s School of Mental Health and Social Work to prepare practitioners who lead with compassion, advocate for vulnerable populations, and create meaningful change in their communities.
Her publication serves as a powerful example of how Barry graduates continue to make a lasting impact through research, advocacy, and professional practice.
