Barry University’s AI Center and DX Lab, launched earlier this year, have already introduced a number of exciting initiatives, and their newest project continues that momentum. This space was created to give students hands-on opportunities to explore AI, build real-world skills, and push the boundaries of digital innovation.

Last week, the center announced that its students will begin developing a custom web application for a Segway S1 robot recently donated by Steve Piscitelli of Axeum Technologies. The project is being headed by Senior Director for Innovation and Technology Education, Tarik Safouan, alongside students Aftab Masjidi, a Computer Science major, and Michael Harwood, a Fine Arts major. The Segway S1 runs a full Android operating system with a custom launcher, allowing the team to customize every detail. From the splash screen and homepage to fully interactive digital content that lives directly on the device.

In this project’s first meeting, students will officially kick off the project by brainstorming ideas, testing concepts, and capturing photos as they explore what the robot can do. This discovery phase will help them understand the platform’s capabilities and lay the foundation for design and development.

The goal of the project is to create an application that will run directly on the robot, giving visitors the opportunity to learn about the AI Center’s learning programs and explore the DX Lab’s services. Visitors will also be able to engage with an innovative demo experience designed entirely by the students themselves.

This initiative places the student team at the intersection of robotics, UI/UX design, and full-stack development. The AI Center and DX Lab plan to share updates along the way and look forward to unveiling the final interactive experience once the build is complete.

What an exciting partnership! I love seeing universities embrace hands-on innovation like this. A custom web app for a Segway S1 robot shows how creativity, technology, and real-world learning intersect. It’s a great example of students preparing for the future through meaningful experimentation.
