Understanding Adaptation in Sport: Lessons from SES 340
In SES 340 at Barry University, students delve into the challenges faced by individuals who have to adapt to a post-injury life, helping individuals gain a deeper appreciation for the concept of a “new normal.” This course segment emphasizes the importance for future professionals to view individuals holistically, beyond their present physical and cognitive abilities. It challenges students to acknowledge the transformative effects of injuries and to interact respectfully with people of all abilities.

The course also explores the dynamics of sport and recreation, traditionally bound by strict rules and standards. Here, students step into the roles of coaches or activity leaders, learning to harness each participant’s unique abilities. They confront the realities of exclusion in sports — where not everyone’s abilities align with the demands of the game — and results in sidelining some players.
Addressing this gap, SES 340 encourages students to reimagine sports, tailoring activities to support inclusive participation and fostering a new normal where everyone has the opportunity to engage meaningfully in sports and recreation.
