DSW Peer Mentoring Program
About Us*
In 2021, the Office of Doctoral Studies launched the peer mentorship program whose aim was to provide support for first-year DSW
students.
Goals
To create a relationship between exiting and entering cohorts of the doctoral program. To promote a space for networking among doctoral students.
Purpose
This mentoring program aims to create a community of support for professional social workers balancing work and a doctoral program.
“I had a positive experience, both as a mentee and a mentor. As a mentee, I remember those moments of feeling heard and seen – like really witnessed for the first time in my life. The funny thing is my mentor simply reflected things back to me in a calm way, but my childhood had been rife with chaos and conflict, it was new to me to be valued.”

“I enjoyed meeting with my mentor. She provided me with useful resource. But I liked being a mentor more; I like letting the newbies know what to expect – the good, the bad, and the ugly.”

*Priority for mentees is given to first-year DSW students. Second-year students who have not participated in the peer mentorship program may have the opportunity to do once first-year students are placed.
Second and third year DSW students have the opportunity to mentor the newest DSW program students as they start their doctoral journey.
Peer mentors are paired with one to three students as their mentor. The commitment requires that you meet with your mentees, either individually or in a group format, for a minimum of one (1) session per semester.
