In an inspiring display of global health leadership, the Filipino American Nurse Anesthesiology Society (FANAS) completed its first international medical, surgical, and dental mission in Narra, Palawan, Philippines, from February 23–27, 2026. PhD student Dr. Dan Lovinaria, DNP, MBA, APRN, CRNA, CHSE, FNAP, FAANA, FAAN, founding and immediate past president of FANAS, and Dr. Tony Umadhay, PhD, APRN, CRNA, FAANA, FAAN, founding board member, professor, and former Barry University Dean, were part of the FANAS volunteer team.

They were joined by a multidisciplinary volunteer team of surgeons, certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs), surgical technologists, pharmacists, and registered nurses, including Piyush Patel, BSN, RN, CCRN, incoming Barry University Nurse Anesthesia student, representing the next generation of nurse anesthesia leaders. This historic undertaking united nearly one hundred healthcare professionals and students from across the United States and the Philippines, all driven by a shared purpose, to extend compassionate, high-quality care to underserved communities.

Throughout the week-long mission, the team provided surgical and medical services spanning pediatrics, ENT, gynecology, urology, dental, and general surgery, impacting more than 1,500 residents of Narra. In addition to surgical interventions, the volunteers organized a community blood drive and distributed school supplies to local children, underscoring FANAS’s holistic approach to community health and empowerment.

Local officials, led by the Mayor of Narra, welcomed the FANAS team with a vibrant reception featuring Filipino folk dances and traditional dishes, embodying the warm spirit of Filipino hospitality and cultural pride. The event celebrated not only the care delivered but also the enduring ties between the Filipino diaspora and the homeland, a connection strengthened through shared purpose and service.

Beyond the clinical outcomes, the mission became a living testament to the organization’s credo: “Compassion in Action.” It reflected the essence of global nursing leadership, where compassion meets competence, and where service becomes both a professional duty and a moral calling. For the volunteers, including emerging practitioners like Patel, the experience offered a profound opportunity to learn, serve, and be transformed by the power of collective giving.

As the FANAS team departed Palawan, they did so with hearts full of gratitude and renewed purpose. What began as a mission became a movement, a movement that reaffirmed the vital role of nurse anesthetists and interprofessional collaboration in advancing health, equity, and human connection across borders. FANAS’s inaugural mission has set a powerful precedent, illuminating a path forward where care, compassion, and cultural pride meet in the service of humanity.
