Barry University proudly celebrates Dr. Keana Fairfax, a 2025 Doctor of Social Work (DSW) graduate, whose capstone manuscript was selected for publication in the Journal of Ethnic & Cultural Diversity in Social Work.

Dr. Fairfax’s article introduces a culturally responsive therapeutic approach that addresses the complex aftermath of child sexual abuse in Black women. Her framework combines Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with the Strong Black Woman (SBW) model to promote healing through empowerment, self-awareness, and community support.

Central to her work is the recognition that trauma recovery must consider the intersections of race, culture, gender, as well as the neurobiological impact of stress and trauma.

The article offers practical implications for social workers and mental health professionals seeking to implement trauma-informed, culturally grounded care that truly meets clients where they are.

Dr. Fairfax’s achievement reflects the mission of Barry University’s DSW program to prepare scholar-practitioners who advance social justice and create meaningful change through research and practice.
