Zhasmina Kerimova’s path at Barry University is a story of growth, leadership, and purpose shaped by perseverance and opportunity. A first-generation international student from Turkmenistan, Zhasmina arrived on campus focused on finding her footing academically and culturally. Over time, Barry became a place where she not only excelled in the classroom but also discovered her voice as a leader and mentor. She graduated summa cum laude with a 3.8 GPA and continues her academic journey as an MBA student, funded by a Graduate Assistantship with the Office of International Student Services and additional support from the D. Inez Andreas School of Business and Public Administration.

One of the most defining experiences of Zhasmina’s time at Barry has been her involvement with the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF). What began as an intimidating introduction to the world of finance evolved into a leadership role as Co-Managing Director. In this position, she helps guide a team of student analysts as they research companies, analyze market trends, and manage a real investment portfolio. Beyond the technical work, Zhasmina plays a key role in mentoring students, creating structure during meetings, leading discussions, and fostering an environment where everyone feels confident contributing.

Alongside her academic and leadership commitments, Zhasmina serves as a Graduate Assistant with the Office of International Student Services. This role is especially personal, as she understands firsthand the challenges international students face when adjusting to life in the United States. Through this work, she supports students with resources and guidance, assists with office initiatives, and helps create a welcoming and supportive community. The position has allowed her to grow in empathy and professionalism while giving back to a community that played a vital role in her own success.

Off campus, Zhasmina gained valuable professional experience through an internship with Morgan Stanley, where she worked in wealth management. There, she supported client outreach, assisted with portfolio construction and performance reporting, and gained insight into how financial decisions directly impact people’s lives. The experience confirmed her passion for wealth management and reinforced the responsibility that comes with guiding others toward their financial goals.

Zhasmina’s dedication has been recognized through several honors at Barry, including the Mother Gerald Award for Sophomore of the Year and the Business Student of the Year Award (2025). As she prepares to sit for the CFA Level I exam, she continues to challenge herself academically and professionally. Looking back, one of her most meaningful breakthroughs came through her growth within SMIF. From feeling lost in early meetings to leading discussions and mentoring others, her transformation reflects the power of persistence and curiosity.

Today, Zhasmina views her experiences at Barry not just as titles or achievements, but as moments of community, purpose and growth that continue to shape her path forward.
