On November 21, 2025, the Green Team hosted a tree dedication ceremony on the south side of the Kolasa dormitory in honor of Joseph “Jojo” Alvarez, a beloved member of the Barry University community. A Cassia Fistula, also known as the golden chandelier tree, was dedicated in Jojo’s memory to celebrate his life, strength, and lasting impact.

Jojo, a Kinesiology and Sport Sciences major, courageously battled cancer and sadly passed away just two weeks before his graduation last May. In recognition of his perseverance and accomplishments, his degree was conferred prior to his passing. Although he was not able to attend the graduation ceremony in person, Jojo was able to hear the news by phone, and those present recall the smile that spread across his face at that moment, one filled with pride, joy, and deep emotion.

Throughout his journey, Jojo demonstrated extraordinary resilience, strength, and grace, continuing to uplift those around him even in the most difficult moments. His kindness, positivity, and unwavering spirit left a profound impression on friends, faculty, and staff. His smile is everlasting in the minds of many.

The dedication ceremony was attended by Jojo’s family, close friends from Barry University and beyond, and members of the campus community. The event began with a blessing led by Father Humphrey, followed by remarks from Provost Ortiz, who honored Jojo’s legacy. A close friend shared heartfelt reflections, and Jojo’s mother delivered a deeply moving tribute that spoke of Jojo’s life, passions, dreams, academic achievements at Barry, and the meaningful legacy he leaves behind.

In honor of Jojo’s courageous spirit and enduring smile, his family has established the “Smile Like Jojo, Inc.” 501(c)(3) foundation. The organization is dedicated to spreading joy and support to young patients and families facing pediatric cancer. Because Jojo loved Barry University so deeply, one of the foundation’s long-term goals is to create a scholarship in Jojo’s name for a future Barry University student.
