Barry University celebrated an extraordinary achievement this past summer where its Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) officially reached a $1.5 million market value, marking a proud milestone in student-driven financial education and hands-on learning. What began in 2011 with just $50,000 has grown into one of Barry’s most successful examples of experiential learning in action.
SMIF gives students the unique opportunity to step into the real world of finance and investment management while still in the classroom. Guided by an advisory board, students make real investment decisions, manage actual portfolios, and gain first-hand experience in market analysis, portfolio strategy, and financial risk assessment. Every trade, decision, and presentation helps bridge the gap between theory and practice.
This program reflects Barry University’s deep commitment to experiential learning. Students learn to collaborate, think critically, and adapt to changing market conditions, mirroring the challenges of the finance industry. Many alumni who participated in the SMIF have gone on to thrive in fields such as investment banking, asset management, financial analysis, and corporate finance.
The growth of the SMIF is not just a financial achievement but also a testament to the talent, dedication, and vision of Barry’s students and faculty. Their success demonstrates the power of experiential education to prepare students for meaningful, impactful careers.
