Angela Lewuers’ journey to Barry began thousands of miles away on Réunion Island, a French territory in the Indian Ocean. Tennis has always been at the center of her life. She grew up with a racket in hand, rose to become the French junior national champion in 2013, competed professionally on the WTA Tour, and later became a four-time NCAA national champion in the United States.

Her path, however, was far from easy. Angela was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a condition that sidelined her from tennis for four years. “I didn’t know if I would ever play again,” she recalled. Her story took a new turn when Barry University’s Coach Avi Kigel gave her a second chance, bringing her onto the team and helping her keep her passion alive. It was a moment that reshaped the course of her life.

One of Angela’s most meaningful breakthrough moments came when she and her teammates won the NCAA national championship. Competing on such a big stage was unforgettable, but what left the deepest mark was the sense of belonging she found. “What truly stands out is the culture of support and family I have experienced here, not only within athletics, but throughout life on campus. From fellow students, to the staff, to professors, and everyone who makes Barry such a special place, I have felt part of a beautiful community that constantly builds you up and helps you grow,” she shared.

Today, Angela continues to leave her mark at Barry in new ways. As a graduate assistant on the university’s Marketing and Brand team, she creates content that shines a light on the voices and accomplishments that define the Barry experience. “Whether it’s highlighting student success, promoting campus events, or sharing stories that build connection, I love contributing to the university’s spirit and brand,” she said.

Now pursuing her master’s in Sport Psychology while continuing to support the tennis program, Angela sees Barry as more than the place where she studied or played. It is the foundation of her next chapter. For her, Barry is not just where her journey was rekindled, but where her future is being built.
