Barry University is answering the call to train the next wave of first responders with the debut of a brand-new fire truck, now serving as a hands-on training hub for students.

Housed within the College of Health Professions and Medical Sciences, Barry’s program is the only one of its kind in the nation to offer a comprehensive emergency management services curriculum under the Academy of Emergency Management Services. Students train across fire science, emergency medical services, and public safety management, gaining the skills to step directly into high-demand roles.

“It is the interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary preparation of the next generation of health providers and those that are first responders,” said Dr. Eneida Roldan, Executive Dean of the College of Health Professions and Medical Sciences.

The results speak volumes:

  • 94% pass rate on firefighter certification exams
  • 95% job placement rate
  • 96% retention rate in 2025

These achievements make Barry’s Fire Academy one of the most successful programs in the tri-county area, demonstrating how higher education can directly impact workforce readiness.

And the need has never been greater. Across South Florida, a firefighter shortage is straining emergency response. Retirements are surpassing new hires, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 25,700 firefighter openings each year over the next decade. This shortage translates to slower 911 response times, prolonged fires, and greater risks for communities.

Barry University’s commitment ensures South Florida is equipped with skilled, prepared first responders ready to meet the crisis head-on.
