Marc-Antoine Harris is a proud Barry University alumnus whose work and passion exemplify the power of purpose-driven science. Recently featured in Upscale Magazine, Harris is breaking barriers as an African American in STEM and inspiring a new generation of scientists by championing holistic healthcare and mentorship.

After a military career devoted to leadership and service, Harris found his calling in health sciences. His journey from taking exploratory classes while enlisted to earning a PhD, was fueled by a mission to help fellow veterans heal from PTSD, chronic illness, and the challenges of civilian reintegration.

Marc-Antoine’s interdisciplinary approach to healthcare which blends kinesiology, exercise physiology, and psychology, challenges traditional models and centers on the uniqueness of each individual. His global experiences, including work in Japan, have deepened his commitment to culturally responsive science. “We must examine the individual based on their health history, behavioral habits and any cultural considerations that may impact the overall outcome,” he says.

A consistent theme throughout Harris’s journey is the power of mentorship. From Barry professors Dr. Zacharias Papadakis and Dr. Tal Amasay, who gave him a strong foundation, to other impactful figures like Dr. Makoto Suzuki of Okinawa’s Longevity Research Center, Harris credits mentors for shaping his career and pushing him toward excellence. Now, he’s paying it forward, urging African American scientists to be visible role models and inspire the next generation.

His message to future innovators is clear: “Read. Read a lot. Even when you’re not working on a project, you’re working on your craft.”

Marc-Antoine Harris stands as a testament to the importance of representation in science and a beacon for what’s possible when knowledge meets purpose. Barry University celebrates his accomplishments and the impact he continues to make in the world.
