For Caleb Gardner, a Computer Science major from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, studying abroad was more than just a semester away from campus, it was a life-changing opportunity that reshaped how he sees the world.
His journey began with a friend’s experience studying in Greece, which sparked Caleb’s own curiosity. After connecting with Barry University’s Study Abroad Advisor, he discovered a program in Seville, Spain and made a decision that would come to define his college experience.
In Spring 2025, Caleb spent the semester in the vibrant capital of Spain’s Andalusia region. He enrolled in courses at two institutions, taking general electives and a specialized course alongside students from across Europe and the U.S. With classes taught in English and strong faculty support, Caleb adjusted quickly to the academic environment.
Outside the classroom, the experience was equally transformative. Living with a host family and navigating a new culture brought challenges at first. Starting over socially and adapting to a different way of life required patience and an open mind. But over time, Caleb found his rhythm and in doing so discovered that stepping outside his comfort zone was exactly what he needed.
One of the most impactful parts of his experience and what he defines as his breakthrough was the opportunity to travel and explore. Over the course of the semester, Caleb visited eight countries across two continents. From the historic streets of Rome and Paris to the vibrant blue city of Chefchaouen in Morocco, each destination deepened his understanding of the world and his place within it.
“Coming from a small island in the Caribbean, I never imagined this to be one of my experiences” Caleb shared. “Travel has given me a new lens through which I now see the world.”
Caleb’s experience abroad has not only enriched his academic path but has also broadened his global perspective, something he’ll carry with him long after graduation.
