On May 2, 2025, Barry University’s Biology Department proudly celebrated the academic and leadership achievements of its top students at the annual Biology Honors Ceremony. Hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences, this inspiring event showcased the hard work, passion, and dedication of students and faculty alike.
The event began with opening remarks from Dr. Christoph Hengartner, Associate Professor of Biology, followed by a moving address from the Department Chair, Dr. Leticia Vega. Their messages of encouragement highlighted the importance of resilience, scientific curiosity, and the role of service in a well-rounded education.
At the heart of the ceremony was the recognition of the Biology Graduates of Distinction, selected by the Biology Honors Committee for their exceptional academic records, service to the university and community, and leadership. Honors designations ranged from Cum Laude to Summa Cum Laude, reflecting remarkable GPA thresholds and academic excellence.
Among the honorees:
Yalena Anderson, named Outstanding Biology Graduate, exemplified the highest standards of scholarship and service. With a goal of becoming a Physician Assistant, Yalena stood out for her Summa Cum Laude distinction and commitment to national service through AmeriCorps.
Kendall Hovius, a Marine Biology major and STAMPS Scholar, was recognized for her international research experience in the Philippines.
Chiara Brambilla, a Pre-Professional Biology major and Sigma Xi Research Honor Society Ambassador, plans to attend medical school.
Nathaly Feliz, president of the Pre-Dental Club, was accepted to Howard University Dental School.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was the induction of new members into the Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) Biological Honor Society. Founded in 1922 and established at Barry in 1969, TriBeta promotes biological research, scholarly achievement, and community service. Inductees included outstanding students such as Paige White, Fanny Herrera Carreon, and Taicarma Rejouis, who took the TriBeta pledge to uphold the values of scientific integrity and service.
The ceremony concluded with heartfelt thanks to the faculty and staff who support the department’s mission every day. Special recognition was given to Mrs. Elisabeta Vajda, Mrs. Helen Balgobin, and Ms. Bailey Dorta for their indispensable roles in lab operations and student support.
As the Biology Department sends off this exceptional class of future scientists, healthcare professionals, and researchers, the sense of pride and optimism was undeniable. These graduates not only met the rigorous demands of their coursework but also made meaningful contributions to the Barry University community and beyond.
