Barry University recently celebrated a powerful and unforgettable event that brought together athletes, students, and community members in a show of resilience, unity, and inspiration. The university hosted a wheelchair basketball game featuring Beit Halochem—a team made up of wounded Israeli veterans—and South Florida’s own Memorial Sharks, proudly representing Barry.

This game was more than just a competition; it was a vibrant display of athletic excellence and a testament to the strength of the human spirit. The crowd’s energy filled the arena, where cheers and support underscored the message that passion, pride, and determination can overcome any barrier. The athletes on both teams showcased their incredible skill, reminding everyone in attendance that disability does not define ability.

The success of the event was due in large part to the collaborative efforts of key members of the Barry community. Special thanks go to sport management professor Parnes Cartwright, graduate student Ben Reis, Athletic Director Scott Smith, Dean of the Andreas School of Business Dr. Bogdan Daraban, and Vice President Smilka Melgoza. Their dedication, along with the support of students, administrators, and the wider community, made this event not only possible but impactful.

This game marked the beginning of an exciting new initiative from Barry’s Sport Management Program, which is launching an Adapted Sport Administration concentration. This forward-thinking program will focus on the management, organization, and sponsorship of wheelchair sports, preparing students to enter and transform a critical segment of the sport industry.

Barry University continues to lead with heart and purpose, fostering inclusivity through action and education. With this new initiative, Barry is not only honoring the athletes who inspire us but also equipping the next generation to carry that torch forward in the world of sports.
