Sports are beloved throughout the world, and for members of the Bridge Research Group at Barry University, they also provide yet another avenue for scientific exploration.
The Bridge Research group, or BRG, is an exciting opportunity for students and faculty members to collaborate on cutting-edge research that impacts real-world problems. For students interested in the sciences, it provides a hands-on method for them to interface with the material they are taught in class. Eventually, these findings can be published, and students will have the chance to present them to professionals at conferences around the country.
Barry University students currently have several studies in the development stage, but their inaugural project is titled: The Impact of Pre-Exercise Mental Preparation on Muscle Activation During Strength Performance. This study examines differences in the effectiveness of psyching-up techniques (e.g., imagery and external attention) on a hand grip strength task, while monitoring cognitive and physiological processes such as attention and arousal level.
On one hand, they gain access to advanced technologies that will empower them to pursue exciting new discoveries in whatever field they may pursue. Things like Senaptec Stroboscopic Glasses which train athletes to pick up important visual cues more effectively, to VR headsets and more, the possibilities for scientific applications are endless. On the other, they learn how to organize their findings and present them, at conferences, in a way that is effective and professional.
