Jonathan Rentler, the 2024 Professionalism Award recipient at the OT Research Symposium and Awards Ceremony, continues to exemplify the fundamental values of occupational therapy—compassion, dedication, and professionalism. His outstanding conduct and unwavering commitment to the field were put to the test in a high-pressure, real-world situation during Fieldwork II placement at Zimmerman School House DBA Lion Star Academy.
During a routine lunch period, a student began choking. Despite multiple attempts by others to dislodge the obstruction using the Heimlich maneuver, the situation remained critical. As the fourth responder, Jonathan stepped in with remarkable composure, applying the Heimlich maneuver with persistence and precision. His calm demeanor and relentless efforts, combined with back slap percussions from the team, ultimately led to the successful removal of the obstruction—preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.

This extraordinary act of quick thinking and resilience underscores Jonathan’s deep commitment to patient safety and well-being. It is a testament to why he was honored with the Professionalism Award, showcasing his ability to seamlessly translate his clinical training, knowledge, and dedication into life-saving action.

We are immensely proud of Jonathan and are confident that his passion and expertise will continue to make a profound impact in the field of occupational therapy.
