Barry University’s Track and Field program is more than just an athletics program—it’s a hub for academic excellence, personal growth, and community engagement. The program was created as part of the university’s vision for diverse and holistic development, combining rigorous athletic training with a commitment to nurturing future leaders. The primary mission of Barry’s Track and Field team is to mold well-rounded individuals prepared to impact their communities positively. With core values of hard work, discipline, and community service, the program ensures athletes excel both on the track and in life. Notably, student-athletes in the program boast an impressive average GPA of 3.40, reflecting their academic dedication.

Barry’s Track and Field program is led by Head Coach Dr. Kevin Padin, who joined Barry University in the spring of 2023. With extensive experience in collegiate and high school coaching, Coach Padin previously led Florida National University’s cross-country team to multiple individual and team records, CAC runner-up finishes, and national championship qualifications. At Barry, he is focused on rebuilding the program and guiding student-athletes toward success both athletically and academically.

What Sets Barry’s Track & Field Program Apart?

Barry’s Track and Field program stands out for its emphasis on full development. From athletic training to academic support through study halls, the team creates an environment where athletes thrive. Initiatives such as community service at the Barry Urban Garden and collaborations with organizations like the Salvation Army further highlight the program’s dedication to character-building. With 46 athletes currently, the program aims to expand by 20–30% annually over the next five years. This growth reflects the university’s commitment to making Barry’s Track and Field a beacon of success and community impact in Miami and beyond. The team actively engages with the local community through events like the Salvation Army, MLK Day Giveback, Valentine’s Day Teddy Grams, and partnerships with local schools such as North Miami High School. The main intent is to raise awareness about the program but also inspire the next generation of athletes.

This past weekend the Track and Field team went to the Salvation Army and packaged over 160 bags of grocery items (over 2,500 pounds) that will go towards feeding those who are in need. Also, they aided in meal preparation for residents at the Salvation Army. Assistant Coach Valentine Thomas said, “When we make time to give back to the community, especially to those that are less fortunate than we are, it truly makes an impact, while at the same time, it allows us to build character and humility.”
