From December 15th to 22nd, 2024, Faiyaz Mahmud Nirob embarked on an impactful medical internship with the International Health Alliance in the Dominican Republic. This unique organization is dedicated to addressing global healthcare disparities by connecting passionate individuals with underserved communities around the world. For Faiyaz, this opportunity was a profound learning experience that combined clinical training, cultural immersion, and personal growth.

The internship’s impact was immense. Over the course of one week, Faiyaz contributed more than 40 hours of clinical and shadowing work, assisting over 260 patients in resource-constrained environments. Through rotations in emergency care, pediatrics, gynecology, internal medicine, family medicine, and pharmacy, he developed a holistic understanding of medical practices in diverse settings. The experience was further enriched by hands-on workshops, including a one-hour Suturing and Wound Care Workshop, where Faiyaz performed sutures under the guidance of expert mentors.

The mentorship Faiyaz received from accomplished doctors like Dr. Cristal Pride and Dr. Victor Gomez Cabral equipped him with invaluable skills in patient education, pharmaceutical management, and emergency care. Beyond technical knowledge, the internship instilled in him a deep understanding of healthcare disparities. Stories of patients, such as a young Haitian Dominican mother of two facing systemic challenges and a pregnant woman avoiding care due to fear of deportation, deeply resonated with Faiyaz, reinforcing his commitment to advocating for equitable healthcare.

Cultural immersion played a significant role in Faiyaz’s journey. Learning Spanish medical terminology allowed him to connect with patients on a deeper level, and the warmth of the Dominican people enriched his perspective on compassionate care. These experiences, coupled with the vibrancy of the local culture, left a lasting impression on him.

Faiyaz credits the Stamps Scholars Program for enabling this life-changing opportunity. The program not only strengthened his technical skills but also nurtured his empathy, resilience, and determination to address healthcare inequities. His journey with the International Health Alliance is a testament to the power of service and its ability to create meaningful, lasting change.
