Valentine Thomas began his journey at Barry University in the fall of 2020, pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in nursing. His first degree was in physical education, and he previously worked as a coach in Nassau, Bahamas. Driven by a desire to make a significant impact in his community by addressing healthcare access and disparities in underserved areas, Valentine chose Barry University for its nursing program, which aligned with his values of knowledge, truth, inclusive community, social justice, and collaborative service.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Valentine’s first two years at Barry were limited to virtual learning. Once in-person classes resumed, he quickly became an active member of the Barry community. He served as a student leader in the Center for Community Engagement, volunteered as an assistant coach in the athletics department, and revitalized the Bahamian Student Association to connect students with Bahamian culture and the diaspora in Florida.
In recognition of his outstanding leadership in community service, Valentine was named the 2023-2024 Newman Civic Fellow, the university’s highest award for student leadership, which is nationally recognized. He also received the Baptist Bond Scholarship, granting him training within the Baptist Health System, including a guaranteed internship and employment upon graduation.
Valentine served as a resident assistant for one year, providing daily support and guidance to resident students. Recently, he joined Barry’s track and field coaching staff as a part-time assistant sprints coach, continuing his passion for track and field while pursuing a nursing career.
Valentine is set to graduate in December and plans to take his board exams by March 2025. He will then join the Baptist Health System as a registered nurse in the acute care setting. His long-term goals include pursuing a PhD in nursing at Barry University, with aspirations of becoming a nurse practitioner. Also, he aims to stay involved in track and field and other areas where he can make a positive impact.
