In an era where food security and nutritional disparities continue to plague communities worldwide, Barry University, renowned for its commitments to social justice and collaborative service, has taken a remarkable stride by opening academic and career pathways dedicated to cultivating food security and nutritional social justice. This innovative initiative not only highlights the university’s dedication to addressing global challenges but also signifies its mission to empower students to make a meaningful impact on their communities.

Tackling Food Security Head-On

Food security remains a critical concern for countless individuals around the world. The disparity in access to nutritious food and the challenges faced by vulnerable populations demand urgent attention. Barry University’s commitment to tackling this issue acknowledges the vital role education plays in finding sustainable solutions.

Promoting Nutritional Social Justice

Barry University’s initiative recognizes the inherent link between nutrition and social justice. Nutritional inequalities are often intertwined with broader social and economic disparities, impacting marginalized communities disproportionately. By addressing these disparities through education and action, the university aims to foster a society where access to healthy food is seen as a fundamental right rather than a privilege.

Collaborative Partnerships for Real-World Impact

Barry University understands that tackling food security and promoting nutritional social justice requires collaborative efforts and partnerships. A grant by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) propelled the establishment of the Barry University CRAFT Scholars program. CRAFT Scholars, which stands for Cultivating Resilience through Agriculture and Food Training, is a transformative initiative aimed at attracting, retaining, and training a diverse group of undergraduate students who will be well-prepared to enter the workforce.

This program also joins forces with the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), a renowned land-grant institution that offers degrees in agricultural and life sciences and with Urban GreenWorks (UGW), a Miami-based nonprofit focused on food systems solutions to human and community health, to create new partnerships, internships and experiences for Barry students. These experiences will not only deepen their understanding of the complexities surrounding food security but also equip them with the tools necessary to create meaningful change. As these programs continue to evolve and expand, the impact will extend far beyond the university’s campus. Graduates equipped with the knowledge and passion to address food security and nutritional disparities will go on to shape policies, champion community-driven initiatives, and influence the global discourse on food justice.
