A concerning decline in women’s awareness of cardiovascular disease (CVD) as the leading cause of death is hindering effective screening practices. Gender inequities and a lack of provider confidence contribute to suboptimal screening and delays in diagnosis. Let’s break down the barriers and prioritize women’s heart health!
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. However, there is a concerning decline in women’s awareness of cardiovascular disease (CVD) as the leading cause of death. This is compounded by historical gender inequities in healthcare, resulting in suboptimal screening, inaccurate risk assessment, and delays in diagnosis and management. Healthcare providers, including nurse practitioners, often lack confidence and comfort in screening women for CVD.
