DSW student highlights included a presentation on social workers’ well-being and workplace experiences, as well as workshops focused on trauma theory in medical practices and the introduction of Qi Gong for self-care. The disABILITY LINK project addressed voting and disability awareness. An essay on school social work during COVID was presented and perinatal mental health and trauma were the topics for community presentations and trainings.

The presentation for Barry’s MSW Seminar called Social Workers’ Wellness and Workplace Experiences: Study Findings and Implications for New Professionals.

Traci Baxendale Ball, LMSW, CAADC taught two workshops for the
Northern Michigan University’s School of Nursing Resiliency Conference.
The first workshop focused how to incorporate trauma theory into medical practices so that nurses are trauma-sensitive. The second workshop introduced Qi Gong as a healing art to address self-care and reduce stress.

Kim Gibson, LMSW was part of the disABILITY LINK project addressing
two critical issues in our society: voting and disability awareness.

Kashera Robinson wrote about school social work and navigating COVID
in an essay she co-authored for the NASW Specialist Practice Sections (SPS) that centers on Intersections in Practice.

Isabelle Valeus provided a professional development training to Barry
students. The presentation was titled “Veteran Treatment Courts: Focusing on Treatment.”

– presented at the 2nd Annual DSW Conference on Education and Social Work Practice.

Nakita Scott, LCSW has provided multiple community presentations and
trainings on perinatal mental health and trauma. She currently partners
with her local Healthy Start agency as part of their Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) team and recently joined the Aetna Better Health Tri-County Community Health Council which focuses on addressing social determinants of health for Hardee, Highlands, and Polk counties of Florida.


Kimm Campbell was recently promoted to Deputy County Administrator for Broward County. She also acts as a point of contact for the Broward Municipal Services District and a number of constitutional officers.

Erlange Elismé presented at the 2022 National Black Doctoral Network Conference. The title of her presentation was “School Social Workers: Meeting the Complex Needs of Minority Children in Predominantly White Schools.”

Jose De Jesus Garcia-Cuellar, LCSW-S, a Mexican immigrant, is a public speaker, published author, founder of Own Your Happiness, and President of the nonprofit organization National Military Empowerment Organization (www.veterangap.org).

Sh’Niqua Alford, LCSW-S was awarded Social Worker of the Year from the NASW-North Central Texas Fort Worth Area Branch.

CONGRATULATIONS to Kashera Robinson for being honored as the School Social Worker of the Year by the School Social Workers Association of Georgia.
